Library Resource Guide: Faculty

About our Interlibrary Loans

The UVA Wise Library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service is a valuable resource that allows students, faculty, staff, and the community to access materials not available in the library's own collection. Through this service, patrons can request books, articles, and other scholarly resources from other libraries across the country.

Key features of UVA Wise Library's ILL service include:

  • Resource Access: The ILL service enables users to access a wide range of materials, including books, journal articles, conference papers, theses, and more, that may not be present in the UVA Wise Library's holdings.

  • Seamless Request Process: Patrons can easily initiate an ILL request through the library's online platform.

  • Timely Delivery: The library staff works diligently to obtain requested materials promptly. The turnaround time for receiving requested items may vary depending on the availability and location of the resource.

  • Borrowing Privileges: Loan periods are subject to the lending library's policies.

  • Digital Delivery: In many cases, electronic copies of articles and other documents can be obtained through ILL and are delivered electronically to the requester.

  • Accessibility: The ILL service caters to the diverse needs of users, ensuring equitable access to resources for research, academic projects, and other educational pursuits.

It's important for patrons to understand that while the ILL service is a valuable resource, it may not be suitable for obtaining materials required for immediate use, as the delivery time can vary based on factors beyond the library's control. Therefore, users are encouraged to plan ahead and submit their ILL requests well in advance of their project deadlines or research needs.

How to Use ILL

To request an ILL, click here (or use the link on the Library's main page) to access the forms

You will then be taken to the Clio login page, where you can sign in or, if it’s your first time using the site, register for a new account:

Once logged in, you can click the “Request” link at the top of the page. Click on “New Book Request” to request a book or other physical materials, and click on “New Copy” to request an article from a journal or periodical.

Fill in as much information as possible about the material you are looking for. Worldcat.org is a great resource for getting publication information. If you have any specific details pertaining to the material you are requesting, be sure to add them in the “Notes” field. The more information you include, the better chance we have for finding exactly what you need. Click “Submit” to send your request.

Please note that ILL books may take up to two weeks to arrive, while articles may take a few days. Be sure to plan ahead if you need materials by a specific date.
